This scene probably shows the coast at Whitley Bay, where the artist lived. He often painted outdoors, in front of his subject. Slater has concentrated on capturing the light and colour of a particular time.

His approach reflects the impact of impressionist art on British painting. He has left ridges of paint to recreate the choppy waves, and added a splatter of brown paint for spray. Slater has worked rapidly, adding new colours without waiting for previous paint to dry.
