The Wallsend yard of Swan Hunter and Wigham Richardson Ltd was one of the best-known UK shipbuilding yards. The cargo ship ‘La Hacienda’, built 1953, is shown on the left of this scene. Another ship is being built in dry dock on the right. Swan Hunter ceased shipbuilding at the yard in 2006.

The artist Thomas Pattison studied and taught in Newcastle.
