This picture was painted shortly before Hemy moved away from the North East. Its style shows that he continued to be influenced by his Pre-Raphaelite teacher William Bell Scott. Pure bright colour and sharp detail create the effect of light flooding the landscape. Hemy probably painted at least some of this picture actually on the beach at Clovelly, in Devon.
