Harriet Dutens sat for Reynolds in 1772 shortly after her marriage to James Callendar. She was the daughter of Pierre Dutens, a jeweller to the court. The Dutens were a French family of Protestant descent. She was the second of three wives of Sir James Callendar of Craigforth and Ardkinglass. She died in childbirth at the age of 23.
