This scene of Ben Ledi in the snow was probably painted when Smith was living at Glassingall, the estate he inherited north of Dunblane.
He lived at Glassingall for several years from 1857. But missing the company of his friends, he sold the estate in 1863 and moved to London where he lived and continued his travels in Europe.
