Catherine

Lady Edna Clarke Hall (1879-1979)

Catherine Earnshaw, a character from Emily Bronte’s novel Wuthering Heights, fascinated Clarke Hall.

Here, she depicted Catherine standing in a moorland landscape. The muted colour palette and use of a wet-on-wet watercolour technique create an uncertain emotional atmosphere. On the left, the artist included a depiction of her son.

Provenance: Gift from the Walker Mechanics Institute, 1942
