Boughton was born in England but grew up in Albany, New York. He began painting at an early age and was largely self-taught, In 186o, during a short period of study in Paris, he became friendly with James McNeill Whistler and they corresponded until the late 188os.
Boughton published a number of short stories and his book illustrations include designs for Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poems. Vincent
Van Gogh, who lived in London 1873-75, was impressed by Boughton’s painting, Godspeed!
Pilgrims Setting Out for Canterbury and wrote about it to his brother, Theo. The painting is now part of the collection at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
