Gold

London, England

Gold specimens at The Natural History Museum, South Kensington, London, England

This is one of the best-formed specimens of crystallised gold in the world.
The size and definition of the crystals in this specimen are extremely rare for gold.
It was named after Charles Joseph La Trobe, Governor of Victoria in Australia, who was visiting the Mclvor mine when this specimen was unearthed. Many nuggets found during the early gold rushes in the rich goldfields of Victoria were melted down, but the quality and spectacle of this specimen ensured its survival.
