Oil painting on canvas, Sir George Otto Trevelyan, 2nd Bt (1838-1928), aged 32 by James Archer (Edinburgh 1822 – Haselmere 1904), signed and dated, bottom right: JA (in monogram with arrow) 1871 and inscribed lower left: George Otto Trevelyan aet. XXXII A three-quarter-length portrait seated, facing, his head resting on his right hand. He married Caoline, daighter of Robert Needham Philips.

Provenance: Given with the property to the National Trust in 1941 by Sir Charles Philips Trevelyan, 3rd Bt (1870 – 1958)

Marks and inscriptions: JA 1871 (signed and dated) Middle of the canvas: Prepared byCharles Roberson 99 Long Acre London Centre of top stretcher bar: Labels with ‘Drawing materials’ and ‘From Charles Roberson London’ written in red ink. Handwritten on the label ‘J Archer Esq. 93 Ladbroke Road Notting Hill’
