Maria Wilson, Lady Trevelyan

John Hoppner, RA (1758 – 1810)

Oil painting on canvas, Maria Wilson, Lady Trevelyan (d.1852) by John Hoppner, RA (London 1758 – London 1810), circa 1800. Half-length portrait of a young woman, facing, head inclined slightly to the right, gazing slightly down and to the right, wearing a white dress with lace collar and black lace shawl. A drawing of the same sitter, probably by Henry Pierce Bone, after John Hoppner of 1801 is in the National Portrait Gallery (NPG D17585).

Provenance: Sir Percy Maryon Wilson, Bt, apparently bought by Molly, Lady Trevelyan as a replacement for a copy that is still at Wallington, in her daughter, Mrs Jennings’s apartment; given with the property to the National Trust in 1941 by Sir Charles Philips Trevelyan, 3rd Bt (1870 – 1958
