On the Tyne, North Shields

Unknown artist

Seen through the gap in the tall buildings on the bank of the River Tyne is the Wellesley’. Until it was destroyed by a fire in 1914 it was used as a training ship for young boys learning to become sailors.
Horton’s intricate pencil drawing, overpainted with washes of colour, captures details such as the rope on the ship’s masts. This is typical of Horton who was an excellent draughtsman, as well as a master of colour.
