The Last Communion of Saint Raymond Nonnatus

Francisco Pacheco (1564-1644)

In 1600, Francisco Pacheco and Alonso Vazquez were commissioned to decorate the large cloister if the Mercedarian convent of Seville with a series of pictures representing the lives of the founders of the order, St Peter Nolasco & St Raymond Nonnatus.

St Raymond, supported by angels, kneels by his bed to receive his last communion from Christ himself. The scene is illuminated by the candles held by a group of Mercedarian monks and angels.
