Oil painting on canvas, Kathleen England, Lady Armstrong (1898-1971), by George Harcourt RA (Dumbarton 1868 – Bushey 1947), signed and dated, bottom right: G. Harcourt 1938. A three-quarter-length portrait of a woman, the third wife of William Watson-Armstrong, 1st Lord Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside, seated, turned slightly to the left, looking out at the viewer. Lady Armstrong is shown in peeress’s robes, wearing a diamond tiara and diamond crucifix, silk dress and red velvet ermine-trimmed robe.
Provenance: Armstrong collection. Transferred by the Treasury to The National Trust in 1977 via the National Land Fund, aided by 3rd Baron Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside (1919 – 1987).
