Watercolour on paper, An Old Jew and a Young Woman, by Frederick Coke Smyth (c.1800-1882), monogrammed. An old man holding a bunch of keys and putting a coin into the palm of a peasant girl who holds a folded sheet of paper.

Provenance: Armstrong collection. Transferred by the Treasury to The National Trust in 1977 via the National Land Fund, aided by 3rd Baron Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside (1919 – 1987).

Marks and inscriptions: signed bottom mid-left, about a quarter of the way up on the left-hand-side, with a monogram of a cursive S through a C
