Portrait of a Lady

Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA (1723-1792)

This portrait of an unknown lady was purchasea by John Bowes in 1840 for £36.15. The sitter’s pinned up hair and delicate feather ornament suggests that it dotes from around 1760.

Reynolds experimented greatly with the application of paint. In this painting the glazes he applied to enhance the complexion of the sitter have faded leaving the face without tone.
