A Puppet show on the Piazzetta, Venice

Giovanni Antonio Canaletto (1697-1768)

A puppet show stands on a platform in front of the Palazzo Ducale, attracting a varied audience, The gesturing figure beside it may be a quack doctor trying to sell his remedies to the crowd.

Until the late 1720s Canaletto painted in a romantic manner, with a dark tonality and sketchy brushwork.

He elongated the proportions of buildings and figures for dramatic effect.
