Farmyard scenes and animal studies, such as this group of mallard ducks, were often painted during the Victorian period. Herring’s skilful portrayal of countryside and wildlife guaranteed his popularity with an increasingly urban population.
Herring was a successful sporting and animal painter, like his father, J. F. Herring, Senior. Their styles are very similar.
