The Collingwood Monument, Tynemouth, Trafalgar Night, about 1930-1938

Louisa Hodgson (1905-1980)

This scene records a celebration in North Shields to mark the anniversary of the British victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in October 1805. Admiral Collingwood, who was born in North Shields, commanded the fleet after Admiral Nelson was killed. This picture has the smooth brightness of tempera paint. Louisa Hodgson exhibited her pictures in London and Newcastle, and taught painting at Armstrong College (now Newcastle University). One of her paintings is among the scenes decorating the first-floor galleries of the Laing.
