Emmerson mainly painted scenes of country life in Northumberland. His light-hearted and colourful animal subjects were very popular. He was a well-respected Newcastle artist.
There is a picture of Emmerson in the collection of the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle, painted after Emmerson’s death by his friend, Ralph Hedley (1848-1913).
The painting shows Emmerson as a kindly, encouraging artist, breaking off from his own work to give advice to a widow, who is painting, and her son.
