The bridges across the Tyne have helped give Newcastle its identity for hundreds of years. The High Level Bridge was opened in 1849. The Swing Bridge was built in 1873-76 to replace the old Tyne Bridge. The new bridge rotated to allow tall ships up the river to factories and shipyards. Leeds artist Arthur Grimshaw was attracted by the dark silhouettes of the bridges combined with night-time lamplight reflected on the wet Quayside.
