“Sea Trials at South Shields” by Laurence Stephen Lowry RBA RA. Sunderland Museum & Winter Garden
Lowry composed a small pen and ink study for this painting while staying at the Seabur Hotel, Sunderland. Here, he was only a short taxi journey to the docks at South Shields, which became the subject for a small number of paintings and drawings of the bustling port at the mouth of the River Tyne. In this painting Lowry creates an un-easy dramatic
fisting upwards from the ship – the viewer tension – with the tall, thick plumes of smoke
must question whether it is normal, nothing-to-worry-about steam, or whether something darker has occurred on the last stage of testing the boat before her maiden voyage.
