In 1966 Lowry said, ‘The Sea, too, I love. To watch it is like letting off steam: it’s so vast.

But generally I put nothing on the sea when ! paint it. Perhaps a tiny boat if I must. The boats that caught his attention were working vessels, tankers, tugs and ferries.
