29th January 2022 North Shields – Storm Arwen

So a (probably unwise) walk around the town with Storm Arwen blowing. The tyne was being whipped up into a frenzy, with great swathes of spray giving the impression of boiling. Outside the piers a ship patiently awaited it’s passing.

On Tynemouth Road a chimney stack had been toppled, luckily no-one was passing. Pigeons were trying to take shelter, with no birds on the wing.

Plenty of damage again to the trees in Northumberland Park, with some large limbs brought to the ground. At least the ducks were safe.

Storm Arwen was a powerful extratropical cyclone that was part of the 2021–22 European windstorm season. It affected the United Kingdom, Ireland and France, bringing strong winds and snow. Storm Arwen caused at least three fatalities and widespread power outages. Damage was exacerbated by the fact that the strong winds came unusually from the north.
