At last the weather was nice enough to go for a walk. For weeks of dark nights and miserable weekends, the sun was shining , and I was able to take some much needed exercise.

Down a the ‘gut’ on the Fish Quay there was a lot of activity by cormorants and gulls. Some fish must have been discarded into the river as there was a frenzy of seabirds diving and fighting over the fish. The cormorants were definitely winning, and I was amazed how they were able to quickly swallow large fish in one go.

The sun on the Tyne was lovely, shimmering on the water as fishing boats returned to port.

In Northumberland park, a very muddy herring gull on an island in the pond was pecking at a large fish it had no doubt scavenged from the water. Probably not the best place to have lunch, as it was probably ingesting as much mud as fish.

Further along the pond, a group of mallards were busy cleaning their feathers, periodically diving, shaking like mad and preening.

A lovely walk in the sun on the run-up to Christmas. Fingers crossed there will be other opportunities soon
