11th October 2020 Preston Cemetery – what better way to spend a Sunday morning?

We’ve often driven past Preston cemetery in North Shields but never taken a look around it. I know may think this is morbid, but I love the social history and the architecture associated with Victorian burial grounds, so I offer no apologies.

On the way to the cemetery, we passed the war memorial on Hawkey’s Lane, in front of a fragment of the Royal Infirmary. Apparently there is talk of moving the memorial to Northumberland Square. This would be a more fitting location as it is currently located on a busy road an little visited or admired.

The cemetery is a lot larger than I expected, and is split into the historic section towards the entrance, the the section still in use towards the rear.

We just took a short walk around, but there is much to explore. One monument I must find is that to Victor Noble Rainbird, a famous local artist from the early 20th century.

On the way back we passed Camp Terrace, possibly the most beautiful street in North Shields. I will be back to take more pictures at a later date, as the grey autumn skies did not do it any justice.
