“The Twins (Winifred and Leonora Reid)” by Thomas B. Garvie, Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne
Newcastle twins Winifred and Leonora Reid are aged nine in this portrait. Their embroidered white dresses are in the fashions of the 1920s. The sisters were painted by the leading Newcastle portrait painter Thomas Garvie. The picture’s formal quality is partly due to the artist’s careful control of the colours, which are limited mainly to cream, and soft red and blue.
