The Alban Hills

Richard Wilson (1714-1782)

“The Alban Hills” by Richard Wilson, Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne

This picture shows the countryside outside Rome. It was begun in Italy, where Richard Wilson spent several years. However, it is likely that it was only finished after the artist returned to England. Wilson’s Italian-style landscapes were very popular with collectors. He was one of the first British artists to paint landscapes for their own sake, rather than just as records of gentlemen’s estates or as backgrounds to figure subjects. Wilson was also interested in capturing the feeling of weather in landscape scenes.
